Is there a site I can go to and submit my idea to see if it is available to patent? Does anyone know anything about patenting an idea, and if it would be worth looking into a "patent company"? I understand they help you patent your idea, (taking their cut of course), but when I don't have the money to foot all the expenses, I would rather pay to have it patented than not able to do it at all.

Whatever you do - do not repsond to the ad on tv about helping inventors. Read an article that only in a very small percentage of the cases, do they get any licensing fees for the inventors. But as long as the inventors pay them cash up front, that firm will work towards your goals for you.
