You will have to have the laptop connected to the wireless router with a cable the very first time only so you can run the CD that comes with the router to set up the wireless signal. After that, you will be able to run the wireless router without having to have a computer attached to it be a cable. You can run a wireless router without having a PC attached by a cable.

You would plug the FIRST computer into the router to configure it for the first time, then you can unplug that cable and go Wireless if you want.

Here is how you want it set up. The DSL modem is connected to the Wireless Router (LinkSys brand is the best). Then any closeby computer (especially desktops) can by hard wired in, using an ethernet cable. Then laptops can connect, using a wireless connetion. When your niece comes to visit, she can connect to your wireless router.

When you bring your laptop to her house, you can connect to her Wireless router (wirelessly).

It will be fun and easy.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

You don't have to have a desktop pc to use dsl
and you don't have to plug in your laptop to the ethernet cable
You may need to change settings so the wireless connection works properly

yes you do! every laptop is designed to run either on an ethernet cable or telephone modem cable.you could find both of them on your laptop,But be sure to attached all the filter on the telephone subcriber line before you attached your ethernet cable and also to your modem. Now if you have a wireless router no need to attached your laptop to the ethernet cable ,your laptop will detect the presence of a signal coming from your wireless router. That's it .
