What I mean is when I turn off the laptop and turn it back on the screen where its normal black going into the windows desktop it will blink like its going out or something like that thats why i was asking if this would fix the problem by restoring it back to factory settings and it is a gateway pc and no warranty left on it.

You can get a Compaq PC at Circuit City or Wal-Mart for about $500 or sometimes less,
The laptop if its a HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario, to be restored back to "factory" you must press F11(developed 2006 or later) to access a program called "System Recovery" You will lose everything on your hard drive, and restore the computer the way it was the day you brought it or you may need to use the CD's that is called System Restore or Recovery Discs. If its another brand, you may probably need to see your owner's manual and use some special instruction.

Good Luck

The second part of your question is not clear enough to me.
There are a number of options but it will help if you have enough tech savvy and like to tinker.
1. Check out newspaper business that are upgrading their PC systems. They usually will sell at minimum price or give one away. 2. Check local schools or school board that are upgrading.3. Check used/second hand stores who often have donated PC they sell cheap.4. Computer shops often sell PC they make from used parts very reasonable.
