The relationship between Imperial Japan and Thailand was ambiguous. Some would say Thailand was occupied by Japan, some would say Thailand collaborated with Japan.

Thailand was conquered by its neighbour Burma during the Ayuthaya period (around year 1300). There had neven been any foreign country who conquered it since then. During the Second World War, Thailand signed a neutrality treaty with Japan. It allowed the Japanese to use some of Thailand ports and airstrips as air bases and for moving Japanese troops and materiel. A small section of the so called Death Railway built by the Japanese using Chinese and Allied POW's along Burma passed through Thailand territory (no Thai labor was ever used in it though). Because of this, the Japanese never treated Thailand in the brutal way as it treated all other conquered Asian countries. During the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Thailand was not affected by those wars.
So Thais are very proud to say that their country had never been colonized or conquered by a foreign country.

Known as Siam in the past, Thailand has never been colonized by foreign powers. Mainly it's because they have a) a long string of able leaders in 1800, and; b) they were able to use the tension between the French and the British. Even so, they were not exempt from Western influences which led to reforms in the 19th century and "many concessions to British trading interests". In other words, Siam had a give-and-take stance, in which it gave something to stronger powers, and was able to keep itself from being colonized as a "reward".

China controlled it in ancient times. But generally, its never been conquered. If im not mistaken, Thailand was a new name given which means land of the free, or something of that sort.

I believe that the people of China way back when controled that area. I believe Japan controled the area during WWII with freedom coming with the American win.
