I'll be heading there from 31/12 to 2/1 and thanks to my bad planning, cannot find a place to stay. Is sleeping in a rented car recommended? Or are there any denizens of the island willing to put up with my friend and I for two nights? Any useful suggestions are much appreciated.

Oh my, you shouldn't be worrying about accomodations because Langkawi has many hotels..ranges from budget tents to 5 star hotels depending on your budget and no. of peoples There are plenty to choose out there. It has many great places to visit and i would strongly recommend you the Cable Car at the Oriental Village which it's near Berjaya Langkawi resort. If you have any problem just email me cdanielwm@yahoo.com, i'll be glad to help if you need, ok? Have a nice day! By the way, try not to sleep in a rented car because you'll get backache!

Depends on the budget. There is challet available there for rushing folks. Ive been there once. Another important thing is are you arriving at kuah ? If yes then you stand a bright chance. Again since this is a year end peak season watch out for the $$$$ prices. The place owners usually cut-throat the visitors & you wont have any chance at the time rather then paying for it. Enjoy your trips :)

Try this great link..i hope you could find your accommodation here at http://www.langkawi-hotel.com ....but at this last minute booking, i'm afraid that all great hotels are fully booked..you may instead try the normal simple backpackers hotel...try and call this one... 6 04 9663688- 'the garden hotel'..located in Kuah ' a town in Langkawi Island..price range from MYR 60.00 - MYR 80.00..

hope this will help ya!
