I was told that vista was made for the 64 bit platform. So doesnt that mean the dual processor AMD 64 x2 chip would be a better buy than Intel Core 2.

Better Buy - yes... better processors for Vista - who knows. You see, at this point, there isn't enough real experience with Windows Vista. At this point, we all have to check the reviews and see. I would not expect to see a clear winner until maybe May or June. Let's see where the real problems are first.

In fact, I do not plan on recommending Windows Vista for new installations, until I have checked each program installation for it's Vista compatibility. Some of my clients use QuickBooks and other software that is not yet compliant. So if they buy Vista now, they would have to buy a new version of QuickBooks.

Another client uses special software for accessing the Stock Markets. This manufacturer is still not ready for Internet Explorer 7 or Windows Vista. So check before you go HALF-******.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

danuitti is the top answerer in this category because he is killer at software questions. However this is a hardware question(although he seemed to still give a software answer).

Anyway, several things wrong with what you have concluded. Firstly, Vista is not built for the 64 bit platform, it is available in either 32 or 64 bit. Secondly, the AMD 64 X2 is no more of a 64 bit chip than the Core 2 Duo. Both are 32 bit chips that can run 64 bits using the same technology, AMD calls it AMD64, Intel calls it EM64T.

AMD was very clever to put the 64 in the name, because a lot of people seem to get confused and think it is somehow superior, when in fact it uses the same technology as the Intel chips.

AMD 64 x2 is better. Windows Vista you might like to wait as is still new and full of bugs.
