This morning, I asked my brother if he wanted me to scratch his 'thing', referring to his lottery scratch-off card. He said I could scratch it if I wanted to, and I said I wanted to because I didn't have one. My father overheard a little and thought we were talking about something else. What a hilarious Christmas moment!

it happens all the time. not only do people hear a word that sounds similiar to what i said, like in your example, but often times they completely misinterpret the intended meaning. and sometimes they fill in what they THINK you were going to say. communication is tricky business.
