I dont think people who can think in new and interesting ways should be so undervalued. But sadly it seems that philosphy is no longer needed in this world or so corps and gov think so... Tis a shame and probably the greatest reason for the down fall of america and other great powers of the world in history. They are the artists, musicians and poets that work for nothing and give so much. They should be valued at the very least imo. Without free thinkers the system of gov / corps become single minded and easy to take control of but whos gona take control you might ask? Anyone that wants power, fools basicaly.

I must disagree wholeheartedly that the philosophers hold the world fabric together. Anyone can philosophize! Anyone can sit around and write books and espouse lofty opinions on the meaning of life. What has advanced civilization is the sciences! The enormous improvement in our quality of life today as compared to, say, a thousand years ago is due to science and technology. A thousand years ago you were considered old if you were 40! Look at our advacnes in medicine, nutrition, agriculture, hygeine. Nobody lives longer today than before becasue of philosophers. Don't get me wrong: the Humanities are nice, and are important; things like art and music and literature and philosophy. But if I had to start a civilization from scratch I'd rather have a few scientists with me then philosophers. I'd take an Eisntein over a Plato. A Plato could come later, after we were settled!

There is the point; philosophers, excepting a few, are not thinking in new and interesting ways. Science works and philosoph does not; it is that simple. Those that put no value on their work, by giving it all away, are not valued. I do not really think that the " downfall " of anything can be laid to the dearth of philosophers. The idea is ludicrous! I think you need to come back to the real world; philosophy is over, this and all other ages belong to science.

PS Einstein was a scientist, who, when younger, read Spinoza, a realistic philosopher.

Not everyone has left philosophy in the dust. Both of my son's majored in it. Also my dad had a PHD in it.
It is a shame that isn't more education on the subject. It seems that many American kids barely learn to read let alone think too deep. But, there are some out there that do.
As long as mankind walks the earth there will be questions -and there will be people who will be philosophers. And like most.....they aren't famous until they area dead and gone.

Also, today's philosophers aren't exactly on a par with Aristotle or some of the philosophers of the past. There is a difference between valuing freedom of thought and valuing philosophers. Today's philosophers tend to be academics who relate rarely and badly to the events of the day that are reported in the media. (E.g., what did you hear from academic philosophers about 9/11?)

When I was doing my Ph.D. in philosophy we would have an entire semester's worth of seminars about something like 'the color yellow'. Free thinkers, original ideas, might be valuable, but I'm not certain that today's philosophers are the one's to value on that account. And I should know, I am one.
