I can say that I didnt realize how popular my daughters name was untill after i named her Kayla(7yrs ago) everyone knows a kayla. If you really like the name and its popular try spelling it uniquely so that it is different in one way dont make a choice by others do what you want for your kid

That is a tough question. It's really just a matter of preference since you can't predict how popular a name will be in the future.
I had the opposite -- I wanted a less- common name for my daughter. She was born in November 2001, when the name wasn't in the top 100 yet. In 2002 it was #93 and this past year it's up to #34 I believe! So you really can't tell what will happen as far as name popularity goes. Just go with your gut.

Why do you want to name your baby a popular name just for the sake of popularity?
Popular means that a lot of people are naming their children that name. They dont UNname their children later on with a different name, so a certain name will always be popular among a certain age of children.
Names that are popular now for naming newborns, wont be the same names five years from now, but there will still be a lot of people with a common, or popular, name from five years prior.
Maybe waiting a few years until highschool drama and popularity contests have worn off, to have children is a good idea...

I would look up common baby names on the internet and see what are common and popular names. I would stay away from the trendy names and naming your child after famous people. I think typing "top 10 baby names" or "popular baby names" into your internet search engine would get you the results you want.

Everyone has been named based on what was the "fashion' of the day. Why do you think there are so many old people called Margret/Rose etc And dont forget that fashion recycles itself!!
I really believe you can call your child anything and it will still be a popular name - within reason of course. Never choose anything cruel or TOO fashionable.
I know someone that called their daughter Paris Apple. Thats ridiculous and she is just a victim of a mother that reads too many magazines.
My daughter is named Lilian (after my grandmother, but Lily is popular at the moment) Grace ( because its a pretty name) and Noelyne (after her parternal grandmother - I'm not keen on it but I respect his choice, and its a family name).
I think if you want to choose a name and you aren't sure if it will be fashionable...make it their middle name - they were meant to be a source of embarrassment!!

What's relevent is how popular the name will be among your child's peers.
A good way to find this out is to check out this site:
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/
That's the Social Security's site, and it allows you to check out the top 1000 baby names (by gender) for any given year.
I had originally thought I'd name my daughter "Emma" -- it was my great-grandmother's name and is my middle name. However, as it's currently the second most popular girl's name, we changed our minds. It would be rather like naming a girl from my generation "Jennifer" -- there are so many of them that they can't even go by their first names, but have to be "Jenny Smith" or "Jen Parks" to distinguish them from all the others.
NOTE: There WILL be 15 -- or more -- other Michael's in a class , or any other group. At one time, I worked with no less than six "Mikes". Unlike the Jens, they were called exclusively by their last names, as the only way to avoid confusion. They had no say in this -- they had to learn to answer. Same thing in the classroom. And trust me, Mike Small didn't like being called Small!

well logic would dictate that if there are a lot of babies born in a year, and named the same name, because it is popular, then no matter how many years you go down the road, then there will be a larger number of people of the same age range named that name, because it was popular the year the person was born.

I personally wouldn't give my baby a popular name. I named my baby girl something different and something I never heard of. I hate going somewhere and they call "Matthew". Atleast 2 peole get up. Try to be different or go with something that has meaning to you.

pick names that you love if you pick popular names there will be 10 kids named the same thing as yours when they go to school

Naming your child is a very serious thing... You should know WHAT the name means and NOT base the decision upon something as fickle as popularity...
