The baby boom was at least as much a product of the change in society as the cause. After the depression of the 30's which had a low birth rate and WWII people took advantage of the new prosperity to create one worker families and have children. This resulted in a shortage of housing, schools, and teachers. The housing shortage produced the growth of suburbs, and the school and teacher shortage cause a decline in educational quality as schools became overcrowded. When the boomers started to come of age in the 60's, the completion for jobs and for college admissions became intense.

The 1950s was conservative - people busy bringing up boomer kids and looked at the world from the prism of their domestic worlds. No wonder bussing was unpopular when voters were assuming their roles as fathers and mothers, fretting about their kids.

In the 1960s the baby boomers were entering university for the first time in large numbers. With their weight of numbers they started protesting against the establishment and the older generation. A large number of young adults unencumbered with mortgages or children of their own could afford to be innovative and take risks, leading to spurts of creativity.

From the 1970s onwards they joined the establishment, and now they run it. As they learn of the problems of running government, companies and institutions, they tend to become more conservative.
