A few years back I went to bartending school and then tried to get jobs at hotels and nice upscaled lounges, with no luck. All I could get were jobs in beer only bars. Later I was told by another bartender that I was to old, and that they only hired young twenty somethings at the places I had applied at. At the time I was about thirty six, but I looked like I was about twenty eight. I was very offended, but didn't know what to do about it.

I haven't noticed any hostility, but I do see that people question the skills of older employees - i.e. can they pick up on the computer programs quickly. Also, if a lot of work is missed due to health issues, then attendence becomes an issue too. No one actually says anything, but it's implied.

I've heard that women in their 50s are having a hard time competing against their younger counterparts.

regrettably, there are employers who do no longer particularily desire "older workers" on their payrolls, and additionally they could discriminate against them via allowing them to flow. even nonetheless, discrimination is unlawful! And an corporation could properly be sued enormous-time, and get into important difficulty with the EEOC if that is shown that they do discriminate. yet on the different hand, there are companies that are relationship older workers. suitable occasion, Wal-Mart reached an agreeement with the AARP to employ workers fifty 5 and up.
