Why do the people in the Southern states of America have a distinct accent as opposed to the people in the North?

america is a big place...people hail from different regions..
their accents can be altered for many reasons too. example, if your mom was from england, you will likely have a slight english accent, and if your dad is from mexico, than you will have that hue in your accent as well.
geopraphically, settlers landed in different places from different places. Some accents I think are also created just to be different, and has became a way of life for those who grew up around it.

A large number of the generation of the founders came from England, a country less than 1/4 the size of America with 10x as many accents!
Look at some maps, America is a huge country, and since the people are free, they don't move around or mix much if they don't want to.

Because America was built off of so many cultures and America probably wouldn't be the same without any other cultures to structure it. So many people across the world come to america to find a better life,job,some people call this place the land of opportunity.

Only in America is the language that comes from around the world. Combined together run down through generations do we talk different. From the mountain folk to the Jersey folk. It wouldn't be America if we didn't. Our for fathers came from around the world to settle this great country.

because america is a free country and immigration is widely accepted in the country. Everyone from every country come here with their accents.
