I've been wanting to learn to play bass for a while, and I think i'm going to go for it. What brand would be good to start with?

Well I'm not really sure..but my first one I would probably buy something cheaper. My boyfriend got a Crescent for Christmas. Good luck learning!

You should go to a BIG store and try some out. They all seem to have different feeling necks and one might suit you better than another. Also, there is long scale vrs. short scale. Smaller hands might be better off with a short scale bass. I hope that helps.
You can also check Musicians Friend and some of the other online catalogs to compare prices.
I like the Fender Mustang bass but there are many others.

i picked up a fender precision bass for a great price. with that, a cable, amp, and other stuff, i didn't spend more than 400. start off with a bass at a better price, than when you get a feel for the sound you're going for, shop around.

now i have a fender Jazz, (like 400 by itself) and i love it. i still play my Fender P just as much though, it's kinda like your first kiss, you'll never forget it.

have fun!!
