It left a white residue on the black surface and I can't seem to blast it off. Has anyone else had this experience?

You should only use products designed for these cook tops.
There is a product called Cerama-Bryte available at Home Depot.
Use this product and a razor to scrape hard residue loose.

It sounds like it dried and powdered and maybe it could have cooked on. Usually windex works well in this application. If the soap had a bleaching agent in it, the stain will be set.
