Depends on the tree: If it's a real tree and given it's been in your house at least 4 or more weeks.....well, I'd think it'd be time to take it down a day or so after Christmas; each day it's up, it's a fire hazard.
Where as an artifical tree, if placed right and is in a safe place, can stay up a day or so after New Year's. It's really up to the one who has the tree.

We - not I (that's a key word!) don't take down our Christmas tree (artificial, thank goodness) until January 6th - the 12th day of Christmas ('Little Christmas' or the Epiphany, depending on your culture). We spend all this time and effort to make our homes into a Christmas celebration/memory; why not extend it longer? In fact, why don't villages and cities adopt a 'Winter Lights' festival and encourage homeowners and cities to continue to light up their parkways, homes and yards with their outdoor lighting displays throughout the dark winter days of January?

My family usually takes it down after the first of January. Some people wait until the epiphany, or the 12th day of Christmas, which is January 6th.

I leave mine up until the end of Yule which is Jan 6. Most people take theirs down before New Year's. My grandma keeps hers up until mid-Jan. Another friend of mine keeps hers up year round (it's a big fake tree that looks pretty real) and changes the decorations to fit the season, and it doesn't look odd in the least.

I take mine down the day after xmas. But tonight I looked at the tree and made the statement I would like to take it all down tonight and my hubby gave me a look, so it will wait till tomorrow. But it is all coming down tomorrow.

usually you would take down your Christmas tree on Jan. 6 or after because that is the last day of Christmas. Christmas starts today and ends on the 6th. the whole Christmas season is called the Epiphany.
