I just got an Epiphone Les Paul for christmas. Its the quilt top, it doesn't have a pick guard. I see some with guards, some without. Do certain models not have them, or is it an option, or did someone just not include it.

The pickguard is an option.

Some like the looks of a pickguard, some would rather show off all the wood finish on the top of the guitar. It is optional. The pickguard is more traditional looking which I think is better.

some like the seems of a pickguard, some could fairly show off each and all of the wood end on the right of the guitar. that's elective. The pickguard is larger classic looking which i think of of is larger suited.
