LOL -- Funny thing was none of the malls around my house were busy until the afternoon on this day.
However, that was an exception and the first year that I have ever seen it that way.

Well most people are going to be returning gifts and a lot of people still don't have to return to work or school until after New Years so...yeah the bigger the mall the more packed it's going to be. But as someone else said in their answer, also a lot of sales will be going on for the next couple of days. So there will be even more people because of this fact too. So be sure to take friends you'll need them to get though the crowds.

Sometimes the malls are worse the day after Christmas then they are the day before Christmas. There are a couple of reasons for this. The first reason is that people are returning all of those "perfect gifts" that people picked out just for them that they absolutely hated. The second reason is that people are exchanging all of those gifts that don't work, are the wrong size, or they had other reasons. The third reason is that this year, all the "big stores" like Macys and JC Penneys have big day after Christmas sales some with doorbuster sales. The final reason is gift cards...people received lots of them for Christmas, and they are looking to cash on the day after Christmas sales and end of year/end of season clearance sales.
If you are heading to the mall. A couple tips:
Get there early, to avoid large crowds.
Check the store hours before you go (many stores have extended hours tomorrow, including early openings and/or late closings)
Know the balance of your gift cards (some cashiers try to "keep" gift cards with remaining balances so that they can pocket them.
Double check your receipts before leaving the store (make sure that everything on sale rang up the sale price).
When you see your size in something and there is limited stock, grab your size, and the next size up or down (if the item looks like it runs big grab the next size down, if the item looks like it runs small grab the next size up). Then take all of the items together to the dressing room, so that you have a "back up" in hand, in case one doesn't fit.
If you are going to a mall with a movie theatre, try to plan your shopping trips during the first or lunch time movie showings of big holiday blockbusters, the stores will generally be less crowded.
Hit the stores when everyone else is hitting the food court for lunch or dinner breaks.
Pack your patience, you will be glad you did.
Take bottled water with you. Put it in a purse, backpack, mini back pack, or carry it, but you'll be glad you have it during those long waits in line.
Carry your wallet, your keys, and other valuables as close to your body as possible. Try to carry your wallet and keys in your front pocket instead of your back pocket to avoid being ripped off.
Don't stash purchases in your car. Carry them around, take a tote bag, a backpack, a friend, or whatever you need to in order to avoid storing purchases in your car. If you have a trunk, only put items in your trunk when people aren't looking, and if you put items in your car, do so when people aren't looking and cover them with a blanket, stash them under the seat, or use some other technique to avoid people breaking into your car to steal your purchases.
Cover up the CD player in your car (if possible), remove change from ash trays or change holders, and take all valuables out of your car before you get to the mall. Lock your car doors, and use an alarm system or a Club if you have one.
Have fun with the crowds. I'll be enjoying a quiet day at home, I wouldn't go near a mall for anything tomorrow, there's just nothing that important!

Yes, that is the day when all the stores are trying to get rid of all the stock they didn't sell before Christmas. They'll have many sales going on at many different stores. Many people even buy gifts for next Christmas on this day.
