In the case of her company that is probably true. Health plays a big factor. Companies figure that they have to hire someone that is not going to be a big burden on them healthwise, especially if they have provide health coverage. They just come up with some excuse or have a list of candidates interviewing for the job and turn down the ones that have health issues.
Another bad one (that I have seen with a local church member who was in desperate straits in a heartbeat) is the firing of older workers so that they do not have to pay them retirement benefits and give them a retirement health plan. There they look for any reason to fire you. They also try to work you to death forcing you to take on extra shifts in an attempt to get you to make a mistake leading to your termination. It is criminal what some companies do nowadays.

It is true-but illegal. Employers can not say that is the reason why they won't hire someone, but there is a LOT of discrimination out there. I work in HR and I don't care too much about someone being overweight, as long as they can perform the job they are given. However, there are things I have to look out for. For instance, one may not thin about really long fancy fingernails, but they can be dangerous when operating machinery. I only mention this because unless you are in the position to hire people, one may not can see the reasons why some people aren't hired. I DON'T endorse, nor do I involve any kind of blatant discrimination of any kind.

A friend of mine applied for a part time job as a waitress. This restaurant is usually packed and everytime I've ever eaten there, the wait staff are running their butts off. My friend is female, about 5'11", and weighs about 350 lbs. They refused to hire her because they felt she wouldn't be able to physically keep up with her job responsiblities.
I imagine that most companies that don't hire overweight people for insurance reasons probably single out those who are grossly obese. Your appearance plays a large role in how people perceive you. A potential employer might think that if you don't put any effort into keeping yourself healthy, why should you put any effort into your job? Also, REALLY overweight people tend not to look as neat and professional in their appearance as people who are slim, average, or just carrying around a few extra pounds.

Unfortunately, it does. As an overweight person (which I am), you are a risk for their insurance rates, therefore making the rates higher for everyone in the company. But, be assured that the company will give you a different reason for not hiring you.

The odds of an over weight person going on disability or worse, "on the job injury" is higher then a regular person. it doesn't make since to voluntarily hire someone knowing that they are likely to be dead weight.
Also, being over weight is a personal CHOICE. Few are that way against their will. A persons choices regarding something as important as health reflect A LOT of their charactor.
And, no, you can not sue them for not hiring based on weight, it is not one of the protected classes, such as race, religion, etc.

Unfortunately so. It also depends on the works and the persons' ability to do the work. Same goes for religion, race, gender, etc. Employers will always find ways around these issues.

I think if the person was physically unable to do their job because they were so severely overweight it might be an issue. If you just have a little junk in your trunk and are otherwise healthy this would not be the situation.
