The renumeration package at work seems to be decreasing year on year. I have been there 5 years and each year the company has been making more and more money and expecting more and more from it's work force. At the same time there has never been a salary rise and any bonuses and gratuities that were received have been fazed out. I have had to take on extra responsibilities to maintain my standard of living and take on extra hours. I was at the end of year meeting the day after the top managers had a christmas party (no invite here and nothing for the normal workers) where it was announced that the company had made twice the profits it had at this point last year, in the same sentence we were told that the company would not even be repeating last years £20 christmas bonus. I was gobsmacked and as a result i am considering proposing that a trade union be appointed using the process granted under the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act. What do you think?

Just to expand a little, the amount in the equation isn't what bothers me, it's what the whole thing represents - It's like they are saying we are not even worth the poxy £20 we got last year. I personally would be happy with a christmas card and a hand shake but even that is to much of an effort. The Act allows a union to force the employer to recognise them if more than 50% of the work force agree to become members of the union - this is the crucial thing. Otherwise the union is powerless and can offer no protection to it's employees.

If you did get a union set up will the work force stick together?.As i worked in one company and the union could not get a high percentage of the workers to vote for any type of action IE they where frightened to loose there salary, if they did any thing, there was always plenty to complain about but when it came to the crunch many backed down.Do a survey of local company's and see what the average earnings is around your area in the same type of employment, that will as least give you some idea on the pay of other company's.If you find things to much why not look for a different position in the same type of industry if possible, try looking online on places like Yahoo jobs or Fish 4 jobs.As i was once told you are the only one keeping yourself in any job.

You cannot force your employer to recogonise a Union, there has to be a percentage of the workforce who have joined the union before the comapny has to recognise them - I think its between 40 - 60%. You can still however have representation in your workplace as an individual but you do have to inform the company that your union rep would be attending any meeting.

hi Sara, in case you reside in the united kingdom. this could properly be an area of regulation we call commercial regulation. The regulation is amazingly particular approximately union attractiveness via the corporation. you're able to look on the commerce Union and Labour Realtions (Consolidation) Act 1992 time table A1 area a million. Your union convenor could be attentive to all approximately this so i can't see the difficulty. you're able to be able to run into issues if there are below 21 workers in the corporate. If there are issues occurring that are unlawful you could flow to the shop steward who can tell the union. they could then bypass this directly to their solicitors. remember, your corporation will possibly no longer realize the union for the needs of collective bargaining yet he won't be able to give up you being a member of a union or cope with you in yet in any different case as a results of union club. sturdy success

Luddite is right ,Under UK Law every employee has the right to belong to a trade union and cannot be discriminated against for doing so.
If you feel you need their help then join a union applicable to your work or the T& G.Go to citizens advice for their local office. You do not have to enrol the help of your fellow workers and ask them to join you if you don't wish to.

maybe you should start looking for work with a decent company if it bothers you that much, I don't get a Christmas bonus all I get is a meal paid for me (no drinks though) however I do get a annual pay rise and I'm happy with my current salary but if I wasn't happy I wouldn't be there
