Supposedly her Dad sends her a telegram to inform her of his impending death; he was gravely ill (there's a scene earlier inside the tent)
So it (the story) basically sums up her fame taking her away from her Dad & the guilt of not being able to be there for him when he needed her.

Her dad dies and she is sad that she didn't tell him everything she could have before he died.

Christina is in the circus and she misses her father. In the video, they showed her trying the type rope when she was a young girl and her father helped her. She missed those days and ran away. Your bf is right.
