When I turned off the ignition, it wouldn't at first let the key out. When I returned to the car to start the car, I inserted the key but the ignition switch would not move.

Your wheels are turned. Wiggle the steering wheel while turning the key.

The same thing happened with my daughters Pontiac Sunfire. What happened was inside where the key fits, got out of order, and did not fit to the key. I can't remember how to describe it, happened long time ago. The inside of the ignition (like a lock), fits around the ridges of the key. The inside of the ignition was not fitting to the key, hence the key getting stuck, not turning on, or turning at all. Had to get the car towed, and a new ignition put in.

This has to do with the power steering. Simply put some tension on the wheel (turn it) and your ignition should free up. This is actually a safety device.
