Generally, Stephen Hawking is accepted as the smartest person in the world. There have been people with higher measured IQs but noone has contributed so much to so many different areas as him. Bill Gates by the way, has only average intellect. I'm not sure why people think he's the smartest man in the world, he might be the richest though.............

The Know-It-All : One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World

Any or all of the scientists who have won Nobel Prizes would be candidates for the world's smartest person.
Briton, Stephen Hawking, although he's suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also called Lou Gehrig's disease) since he was a young man and is confined to a wheelchair, is considered the world's foremost living theoretical physicist and, arguably a very, very smart man. Still the title of `the smartest person in the world' is a subjective one.

A lady named Marilyn Vos Savant is recorded by Guiness Book as having the highest IQ ever recorded at 228 although this has been met with some criticism. She is marrried to the inventor of the Jarvik artifical heart and writes a column every week in the "Parade" magazine

Well, the richest person in the world is Bill Gates, but I don't think he's the smartest because his Windows operating system SUCKS!!! So, my next pick would have to be Donald Trump. He seems quite intelligent in interviews from my opinion. Of course, he's not smart when it comes to women, but that's a whole other story.

the answer to that would be subjective.

You could go by the highest IQ, but that would only take intelligence into account, and while I have known some very intelligent people when it came to common sense, they were sadly lacking.
You could go by common sense, but there is really no way to rate that, and while someone may be blessed with a great deal of common sense, their intelligence level could be very low.
I personally don't think that there is "smartest" person out there. I think that there are people with strengths and weaknesses in all categories, but no one person tops them all.

I think...It depends on a person's perspective.

Some think that Bill Gate is smart, as he is the richest person in the world.

Some think that Albert Einstein is smart, as he found the theory of relativity, E=mc^2.

I think everyone is smart.
