My 1992 TC will shift gears, but when I let off the gas, it makes a noise like there is a card in the spokes. Also, my power is down to nil. I can drive, but at 4500 RPM I am just able to pull through an intersection. Is this the differential and can I fix it?

Well if it is a standard transmission it could be a bad clutch,if its automatic you may need a trans overhaul.Another possibility is a bad axle or CV joint in the front axle.If one joint breaks internally and the car sends all the power to the wheel with least resistance. So reving up the engine will eventually move the car but at minimal performance.

Is it when you let off the gas or the clutch? If it's the gas I find it hard to see that it will increase in noise since the rpm goes down.

If it's your clutch then it should be your clutch plate which is so worn out that the mounting studs are rubbing off the flywheel. I could have come loose as well. The differential may not be the case because if it's a front wheel drive.. you might not have one at all.

Also try to see if your velocity bearings are shot they can produce clicking sounds at low RPMs when the are broken in half.

Also check if you have a transmission oil leak. When it is dry.. it also produces crackling or clicking sound.

Good luck with your car and try to get home safe

Feel the brake rotors after you drive it,see if anyone is hotter then the other if so the brakes could be hanging up causeing the power loss. Check the CV joints on the axle for looseness and noise.

There can be many things wrong with your car. The only sure bet is to take your car to get diagnosed. I had a car that made a popcorn popping noise and it turned out to be the axle. Be on the safe side and get it checked by a technician.
