Lennon was on a heavy LSD trip while writing the song. The song, was written because of a fan letter adressed to him. The letter from a classroom, asking what one of his songs meant. This classroom had tried interpreting Lennon's lyrics. So Lennon, thought it would funny to write a song that makes no sense. This urge, combined with the LSD, resulted in "I am the Walrus".
Later, "Glass Onion", another Lennon song, which appears on the White Album. Lennon states that "The Walrus was Paul". He got a kick out of people trying to interpret his lyrics. This was during the "Paul is Dead" fiasco.
