Ok, here are my recommendations for effective cleaning.
Fuel system: For basic routine maintenance, replace the fuel filters regularly.
When something goes wrong: Remove gas tank, and wash it out with a high powered solvent such as acetone in a well ventilated area. Remove fuel injectors, apply 12 volts to open the injectors, and pump injector cleaning solvent backwards through them to flush out any deposits. Don't bother doing this unless you have a good sign something actually needs cleaning.
For cleaning out the sludge and deposits, I generally do not recommend doing this to an engine in decent shape. The reason is that you may flush the sludge out halfway and have it move from an open area like under the valve covers into a tiny passage where it can do some real harm. But if you have an engine with serious sludge problems and have to get it out, here's a method I have seen from a guy I trust:

If that doesn't work, you may have to resort to the safest and most effective way to remove the sludge, which is to disassemble the engine completely and wash all the parts in a "hot tank."

Diesel fuel mixed in with the oil does a good job but you have to be careful and not run it too long. Change the oil but instead of adding 5 qt of oil (for instance) add 4 qt of oil and 1 qt of Diesel fuel. Run the engine for about 10 mins then drain oil thoroughly and refill with fresh oil and new filter. If it does not clean it totally repeat after the engine has a few miles on it. It is a lengthy process but will clean up the inside of the engine.
Chevron fuel injector cleaner is by far the best cleaner on the market. I have always had good results from using it.

As a hign school kid, buying junker cars, we used to flush out the engine by mixing kerosene with oil to get a very thing solution, and then cut the spark and turn the engine over with the starter, but not let it start. Do this several times and the flush comes out pretty clean.
Before you can start the engine, you have to do the same prossess with clean oil in the enging to lube all the journals and get rid of the kerosene.
It will clean journals and mains and cylinder walls, but does very little to free up rings.
Doan no what it does to injectors, but the cars ran better for certain, Burtan

Sludge is caused by the engine oil, not the gasoline. As far as clogged fuel injectors go, good quality gasolines all contain fuel injector cleaner, regardless of octane rating. The only cars that can benefit from higher octane fuels are those that are designed for higher octane fuels. Your car was designed for 87 octane and is incapable of taking advantage of either 89 or 91 octane. Use the 87 and save your money.

There is a product called Hydro clean, to clean crankcases. Follow the enstructions on the contaner. If you crankcase is this durty your running the wrong oil it is not doing its job, your oil should be black within 2000 miles. It is also a good idea to change oil filter every time oil is changed change oil every 3,000 miles.
