I just got a tamagotchi and i set the date and everything,but how do i turn it off?

You cant turn it off, the only thing you can do is pause it.Now if you pause it the age of the tamagotchi will stop, he will not grown until you restart
Press the first and third button simultaneously and that will open a Little window asking you if you want to pause it. click on yes, and that will do the trick. to restart it repeat the steps.

That's the thing you can't turn it off because its a virtual pet which means it can't go off but you can pause it by clicking the (a) and (b) button together at the same time . Enjoy
