For starters if you havent had your baby yet you will want to get a bassinette instead of a crib for at least the first 3 months. You and the baby will sleep much better at night. After being cramped up in your belly for 9 months the size of the big world is alittle frightening and cold. In the basssinette the sides are high and there isnt that much room for a breeze. They also feel safer since it is more snug. But to each his or her own. Second babies grow so fast and you can probably find a practically brand new crib at a garage sale for about $10 or maybe $20 . I would throw the old mattress out and get a new one unless the one it has is plastic which they normally are and you can have it steralized. The crip itself you and sand and paint or simply wash and clear coat it. By the time a baby is 2 they wont stay in a crib any more . Third I am trying to figure how is the gift card a gift card if you are still paying for everything. I would take about 15 minutes and look through the classified ads of you local paper and look under misc. I see cribs all the time for sale for like 15 dlls. Unless you are planning to keep the crib around for awhile why spend almost $300 on something you will just get rid of in a couple of years anyway. The only thing the baby cares about is that its dry and fed. Thier last worry is the condition of thier crib if it is brand new or almost new.

Hello~ I'm a mother of 3 going on 4. I just want to share an experience I had with my second baby.. I bought a second hand crib that looked in "Great condition". Well, I had the crib for about 3 mo before I threw it away.. My son was 2 1/2 mo old and the screws on the crib backed out of their holes on one end. The crib ruffle hiding the screws, so I had no idea. Which to my horrifing surprise, waking up to a scared screaming newborn, the end of the crib mattress had dropped to the floor penning my newborn against the bars of the crib and the fallin' mattress. My baby was fine. But, the second hand crib was thrown away!! PLEASE FOR YOUR BABY'S SAKE, GET A NEW CRIB!!.
If your a first time Mom.. NEVER buy a used CRIB, CARSEAT,SWING OR ANYTHING WITH MOVEMENT THAT YOUR BABY WILL BE IN THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT'S HISTORY!!
Good luck and Congrat's on your up coming arrival

Hello Me,
I have got a crib like the one you saw for $180, but mine cost $600, you can buy the crib but at least buy a new mattress for the crib, you dont know what the mattress is realy like and you dont want your baby to get sick, so ask the owner if you can get the crib for a cheaper price and then buy a new mattress, it would end up a lot cheaper for you.

It's ultimately up to you, but IMO, get the used one. Check it out thoroughly before you buy it. And use the gift card to buy a new mattress and a bassinet (if you don't already have one), or a mattress and other things you need. But a bassinet is a lot more cozy and secure feeling for newborns, and they'll like it for about the first three months.
I got a used crib (for free! I was lucky!) from one of my husband's co-workers, and it's in great condition. So used cribs can be great to get, just check it out completely beforehand to make sure it's in good shape.

The bed frame might be nice, but I'd second guess the mattress. Buying a second hand mattress is just asking for troubles. It may look decent on the outside, but inside the framework could be a whole lot of stuff you do not want your child sleeping on. When getting any kind of mattress, its always best to buy new.

I would go for the second hand one and then just but a new mattress cause sooner or later you are going to need the bigger bed and it will save you some money in the long run

There is nothing wrong with going second hand. I was a single mom when i was pregnant with my daughter and alot of her baby things were second hand. If it is in good shape, you should be able to tell just by looking at it. Use the gift card for something that you are going to be using for a while. Diapers!

Used items are not bad as long as they aren't more than 5 years old. Designs change constantly for more safety. I wouldn't use a used mattress ever. You don't want your baby sleeping on someone elses spit up, etc. EWWWW!
