Do you think I would actually get to watch it faster if I had a friend in Japan send me a DVD?

I think you can wait some more time because most of the characters present in the movie haven't appeared yet in the TV series. I mean the dub version aired now in the US.
I haven't seen it yet so I don't know when it takes place but I guess at least after the Soul Society arc so a bit before or after the episode 60. And I saw that in the US, the episode 16 just aired in the US.
So you still have some time before it is licenced in the States at least 9 to 10 months.
