The further back in time you try to predict, the greater the probability of error. Current theory is that the solar system is made from debris of a star that has exploded. The formation of elements greater than Hydrogen is made during the fussion process that takes place in stars. Since the earth is made from many materials heavier than hydrogen, then we can assume that the matter that is the earth, including man, was once star stuff. We can look at the earth and the moon and see that we have a shared history, but the number of creaters on the moon is greater than on earth. It is not be cause the earth was not subjected to the same collisions, but because the surface of the earth has be replaced by the volcanic activity and tactonic plate movement. The age of the matter that makes up the earth is older than the solar system, the age of the earth as we know it has a shorter history.

I heard that scientists say the earth is about 6 billion years old. They found old rocks that were probably around when the earth first formed and used them to tell how old the earth is.

can't be said any better!
