Well if you can't measure him, I'd say 78, 80, or 82 inches, depending on his build of course. 78" would be fine for a average TB. Hope this helps, :)

I wish there was such a thing as a year-round blanket but alas, there is not.
Summerweight blankets will be of a different material, often incorperating cottons and sunblock weaves to keep your TB cool and bug free.
Winter however is a much more complex thing. If your horse has not been blanketed prior to this season, you need to ask a couple easy questions:
Is your goal to provide warmth?
Do you want to keep the haircoat shiny?
Is your TB turned out with acess to pasture where it can run, roll, and mangle a blanket?
Will that blaknet get wet and sicken your horse?
Trust the pros and get a blanket for every season. Online stores will also have a nice 800 number that is a 24 hour lifesaver, as we horseowners cant always be by our horses side. Calling the tack store will allow you to compare brands and types, as well as prices. Sizes vary, so be sure to get an approximate idea of your Thoroughbreds condition before calling. Then let the helpful people do their work.
You might also ask your barn manager if blakets are allowed? as some stables do not add this service of putting it on, taking it off, sending it to the wash and repair blanket cleaners.
Although fit is importent, type of blanket is just as importent. Im quite sure you would agree that if it costs a lot to do, doing it right is easier than making an expensive mistake. Good luck and when in doubt about size my guess is that a adustable 80 is a safe bet.

An average blanket size for a 16.2 - 17 hand horse would be about a 78".

However, aside from height, horses vary much in weight and length-of-back, so the measurements will vary from horse to horse, regardless of similar heights. Since blankets are not cheap and you probably only want to buy one blanket without returning it, perhaps there is someone who can help you by measuring your horse while you are away?

One easy way to measure is:

Obtain a soft measuring tape.

Measure from the center of the chest along the side of the barrel and belly to the point just before the tail. This measurement will be the size for your blanket.

Match this measurement to the recommended size chart. If your horse is exceptionally broad, it might require the next size up.

. All you need to do is follow these easy directions to measure for a blanket for your horse. First, with a friend or a family member, get a tape measure and measure from the middle of your horse’s chest to the middle of his tail. Write down your measurements and go to your local tack store. Pick out the type and style of blanket in your horse’s size. If your horse is an odd number size round it to the nearest even number size. To make sure it fits put a towel or table cloth under the blanket and try it on. In order for it to fit it shouldn’t be so low it’s down all the way to your horse’s knees but at the same time it’s not super tight. Now your horse is ready for the long winter ahead!

DO NOT buy a blanket with out measuring your horse.
My TB is 16.3 hands and takes an 84 blanket.
He is not that large of a horse but has a big heart girth measure.
Some horses do.
You need to measue around the heart girth and the length from neck to tail.

I can tell you that your horse is about 68 inches tall. You might be looking at a 78 to 82. You can always ask if you can return it to a local store (if it is a chain store) when you get home if the size isn't correct.

get a tape measure & measure from the middle of chest to the tail. you can use any tape measure. Do it 4-8 times then average it. That is how you measure.
