My friend believed that there were Lions (the animal) roaming in England a long time ago, hence England putting them on their coat of arms and using the animal as a symbol of their sovereignty? I doubt there were Lions in England, but I am interested to know hey they even knew about them (lions) to then put them on their coat of arms.....England isn't too far from Africa....but were the English going there at that time?

Actually, there was a type of lion on the continent of Europe and on Britian that had been noted during the Roman occupation era and continually through some time of the 12th-13th century. It was some sort of cave mountain lion type. The creature was hunted into extinction (as per usual) but the lions on the crown are African lions which portray nobility and courage.

The first quarter consists of the three gold lions of England walking and shown full face, on a red background. The lion is the oldest device known in heraldry and, as "king of beasts", was adopted by kings of Leon, Norway and Denmark as their emblem.

However, the origin of the three royal lions of England still remains a mystery.

In the 11th century, Henry I, known as "the lion of justice", may have been the first English king to use a lion. It is uncertain as to why a second lion suddenly appeared. When Henry II married Eleanor of Aquitaine, whose family emblem was also a lion, it is believed that he added the third lion. There is no question that, when he led his English troops in the Crusades, Richard I, "the Lion-Hearted" carried a shield emblazoned with three golden lions on a red background. To this day they have been the royal symbol of England.

The only lions in Europe were imported from Africa. Much of Africa was once occupied by Europeans. England kicked butt in Africa. I am not sure about Mountain Lions or Cougars but I believe they are only from America. Ah the fox. I believe the fox is England's fiercest animal and they just passed a law forbidding the hunting of it. xx

The Lions were the primary reason I left England, in Cambridge we were overrun with the beasts, bloody great black maned , long toothed monsters. I am glad I wasnt the youngest in the family as my dear old mum had to throw a child out to them every morning starting with the smallest , I saw my time coming so I buggered off to the U,S.A where the lions arenot as thick on the ground.
That being said you must also remember that we have a Unicorn on the coat of arms too, they were around as well but they were not dangerous , quite friendly in fact unless you tried to mess with their horn.

It is far too cold for lions to survive the English climate. The lion symbolizes strength, courage and majesty.

Britain has never had these particular animals roaming wild as Africa does presently.
