There's an old hobbit custom of exchanging pre-owned gifts, or what are called mathoms----I think it's a fine custom.
Say you have something that you know someone else might like or find useful, and you don't need or have to have that item, why not give it as a gift, as long as you don't pretend it's new. It can be a very informal process, and folks can share nice things, and get a lot of use out of items which might otherwise be sitting on a shelf unused.

Yes I have. One year my dad gave me a set of wine glasses and I already had some so I rewrapped them and gave them to my mother for christmas. As they are divorced they never knew a thing!
