For a wired router, you can get one for under $40. You can buy the extra cable for $20. I would go with LinkSys
At Costco, you can buy a wireless router and wireless adapter kit for about $100.

There are many different types of routers out there and the price varies greatly. Any computer store will sell them. A router is more secure because it provides a built in firewall. It also provides routing functions and NAT (Network Address Translation) so you can have more than one computer attached to your Hi Speed modem. Not to mention that if you choose to get a wireless router then you can add a laptop later. You can find a basic router for around 50.00, give or take. Hope this helps...
