I found this bit of history at Military.com. I hope this answers your question, having served in Germany myself, at Storck Barracks in Illesheim, I understand your curiousity:

Lee Barracks Today

My name is MSG Tom Earley. I served in the Scout Platoon for 2-87 Infantry at Robert E. Lee Barracks in Mainz, Gonsenhiem from August 1982 to February 1986. My wife's family is from Mombach; right outside the old back gate. Before our last PCS to CONUS in November 2002 I went back to have a last look at Lee Barracks. 2-87IN billets are now offices for Telecom; 4-69AR billets are now surplus college dorms; 2-28IN billets are gutted, and just sitting there like a movie set in a War Film. The Parade Field is now a small park, and Condominiums, as are all the old motor pools, bowling alley, gym, etc. I took no pictures of this because that was not how I wanted to remember my Lee Barracks. I just thought you all would like to know this.

My husband was stationed there and I believe I knew MSG Tom Earley! My ex husband s name was SGT Paul Greenhalge. He was in the same exact unit during that same exact timeframe, you must know each other. My name is Maryanne and worked as a civilian at the 142nd S&S Bn located at the Mainz-Kastel compound. I m going back to visit in September and am trying to locate some of places I worked and lived. We lived down the street in the military housing and am trying to find the name of it and the actual location if anyone knows of it. Also what was the high-rise housing nearby called? I remember there was a park with camels..strange but true.
