This is true--I know because I'm a freshman at college.
I avoided gaining weight, however, by exercising (always walking to class and occasionally jogging/going to the gym/taking fitness classes) and eating healthily. You should ask around at your college's gym or fitness center (or a nearby one in the city) and see if there are any classes, or just go and do some reps on the machines. Jog for 10-20 minutes a night, or do miles. And eat healthily--avoid pizza and pasta and go for salads and other lighter foods.
It might have to do with stress and the new environment, or it might just be having the freedom to eat pizza whenever you want. Either way, exercise and eat healthily and you should be able to shed a few pounds and have clearer skin.
Best of luck!

It is quite true. It might have to do with adjusting to stress and being away from home. The "freshman 20" also might have to do with the fact that many students eat in the school cafeteria and choose unhealthy foods. Be careful. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating healthy, and getting enough exercise.

The weight gain is due to the increase in calorie consumption often times. You're away from home for the first time without parents guiding you in the right portions and right foods to eat. College dorms / cafeterias serve all types of food -- including the stuff you shouldn't eat in larger quantities.

I actually lost weight when I started college. I think some college students gain weight because they start eating a lot of pizza, burgers, etc, so it is important to keep a healthy well balanced diet.

its very true. Two simple things to help, drink up to 8 cups of water day, and never eat past 10pm, and you will see a difference within one week... guaranteed!

Stress can cause all sorts of anomalies. It's possible, I suppose, but I suspect it has more to do with a lousy diet.
