If you have allergies you will want a vacuum with hepa filter. If you can spend $500 or so for a vacuum the dyson dc15 series is for you. They have models called "animal" that are specifically made for getting up hair and have a hepa filter.
Altho, if you have asthma you may want one w/ a bag. According to one vacuum website: While some bagless vacuums do have true HEPA filtration, serious allergy sufferers and asthmatics may want to choose a bagged system over a bagless. The reason for this is that with bagless systems the dust is collected into a bin. When the bin is emptied, because it is not sealed as it would be with a bag, there is the chance the dust may escape into the air.
So I think electrolux can also be the way to go, plus it's cheaper than dyson. Their 6989a model has a self-closing bag. BTW i'm getting all this from the web - I don't own an electrolux.

Depending on your budget, You should look into The Dyson line of vacuums. Second, if you cannot afford the Dyson, look into the Oreck line. Do your research on the Internet, then if you have access to one, go to a store that sells all brands of vacuums. We have one here ( North California ) called "The place that sells vacuum cleaners". Their only product is vacuums, and they sell all brands.

If you can afford it,dont go with one from Walmart or similar places for $100. Check into a better line of vacs. My wife and I have a Kirby upright, and it is one of our best investments. It also is self propelled, real easy to push back and forth .

As the ad used to say: "Nothing sucks like an Electrolux." It is the best, honestly.
