For standard tuning:
the thickest string is E. second thickest is A, third is D, and the rest is G, B, E (thinnest string). so the order from lowest (thickest string) to highest-pitched is E-A-D-G-B-E. Holding down the 5th fret of E should be exactly in tune with A played open (open means not pressing down on it). You need to tune this string (thick E) to an electronic tuner or piano first to accurately tune the rest of the strings, unless you can tune a perfect low E by ear. Holding down the 5th fret of A should sound exactly the same as D played open, and so on for all the strings except G, which you hold down the FOURTH fret of to sound exactly the same as B. So,
5th fret of E should sound exactly like A played open,
5th fret of A should sound exactly the same as D played open,
5th fret of D should sound exactly the same as G played open,
4th fret of G should sound exactly the same as B played open, and 5th fret of B should sound exactly the same as E (thinnest string) played open.
You can also search for guitar tuners online that give you the exact sound of each string played open and you can tune according to it, which might be easier.

Guitars are tuned in the key of A, concert pitch.

The guitar will be affected by bad tuning, (it damages the neck) so put in the time and get it right.

Simple rule: you know when you're making a sound that's wrong. Always correct it. Tune before playing, and retune if the strings drop (loosened by playing)

In some cases you may need to tighten the machine heads to prevent the strings detuning on you.

Try an electric guitar tuner from Musiciansfriend.com or your local music store.

i doubt you can play if you dont know how to tune...but ill answer ur question anyways:

your tuners might suck for one thing--what kind of tuners do you have (sealed? grover? cheap ones?)

do you have a korg chromatic tuner yet?

if you dont know the answer to those two questions, you have two problems.
