X is Greek for Christos which is where Christ comes from. Christ is actually a title, not a given name like Peter or John. So Xmas is the same thing as Christmas, regardless of what most people believe.

At one time there was a Sheppard's crook in the middle of the X. The Sheppard's crook on a cross symbolized the crucified Sheppard....Jesus Christ. As is the way of all symbols they have been changed, simplified over the years.
