I had an abortion three years ago and I'm noticing that it is not easy for me to get pregnant. I see where I have missed the pill, the condom breaks and a number of other mishaps happen and I haven't gotten pregnant. I'm not trying to, but I'm just afraid that when my husband and I are ready we wont be able to. I see where other people just miss a day of the pill and boom, they r pregnant. Your opinions will be greatly appreciated.

As I understand it, women who have had multiple abortions can have problems carrying a child to term in the future due to issues like an incompetent cervix. One abortion should not have any long term impact on your fertility.

Even women who are not using birth control and are actively trying to get pregnant have only a 20% chance of conceiving during any given cycle. Don't stress yourself out over not getting pregnant when you had a few mistakes with birth control. It's only an indication that the time wasn't right, not that you're infertile.

I'm sure in some situations it might have hurt a woman's chances at having children later but I know a girl that had 2 abortions and then went on to have 2 children with no problems. But it probably just hasnt happened because like someone else said their is only a short period of time when you can get pregnant.

There do not appear to be any convincing studies that would indicate that surgical abortions have any significant link to increased miscarriage rate or problems when trying to get pregnant-- at least for the first abortion.

One study may point to an increased rate after multiple abortions.

There seems to be no evidence at all that emergency contraception or non-surgical abortions could cause later miscarriages or problems when trying to concieve

I know somebody that had 5 abortions and was a drug abuser and now she has 4 kids

I've heard that several abortions can cause an increase in your chance of miscarriage, but as for conceiving I'm not sure. Have your doctor check everything out. She can tell you if there's scarring or something else causing the problem.

Getting pregnant is actually fairly complicated and the timing is very important. There are only about 24 hours were the egg is able to be fertilized. Sperm can live for up to 3 days inside of a woman, but even with that taken into consideration there isn't much fertile time in the month.

"Most doctors agree that having a single abortion has no effect on future pregnancies. It is possible, though, that having more than one abortion might increase the risk for a low-birth-weight or preterm baby. Even in that case, the chance of having a healthy baby is good. "

Abortion results in cervical damage, which results in permanent weakening of the cervix, which, in turn, is unable to carry the weight of a later pregnancy. The cervix opens prematurely. A survey by Dr. Ren, "Cervical Incompetence - Aetiology and Management," Medical Journal of Australia (December 29, 1993), Volume 60, reported that symptoms related to "cervical incompetence" were found among 75% of women who undergo forced dilation for abortion

In a study performed with 252 women, the investigators concluded that "the occurrence of either induced or spontaneous abortions independently and significantly increased the risk of subsequent development of secondary infertility. - Study done at Harvard from the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health. Feb 1993 issue.

The Fallopian tube is a fragile organ, if infection injures it, it often seals shut. The typical infection involving these organs is pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). "Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is difficult to manage and often leads to infertility, even with prompt treatment ... Approximately 10% of women will develop tubal adhesions leading to infertility after one episode of PID, 30% after two episodes, and more than 60% after three episodes. - (M. Spence, Sexually Transmitted Disease Bulletin, John Hopkins University).

Your single abortion a few years ago will not have an effect on your fertility. It all comes down to the timing of having sex when you are ovulating.

Yes, abortion can decrease your chances of both conceiving and carrying your baby to term:

If you'd like free post-abortion counseling, I recommend http://www.healinghearts.org They have an excellent online post-abortion study, and just about all of their email counselors have aborted babies themselves. They can help.

it could be a fluke - there's always the possibility though that the abortion screwed something up... i'm sorry if that's what it is... i would go to the doctor if i were you.
