Question

Each letter in the word 'esoteric' has a value. Work out their values to compute the sum of the word 'esoteric'.

CLUES

T O x S O = 12,220,496

(rose =134; trice = 190; sir = 148; ice = 88; rise = 164)

(I am an amateur at inventing brain teasers, so I could be wrong).

(Add together the value of the letters in e-s-o-t-e-r-i-c).

The answer is 268.

As others have said you can find E = 16 from comparing the values of SIR and RISE.

I = O + 30 from RISE and ROSE.

Now factorise 12,220,496 into 2*2*2*2*19*61*659. We need to create two four digit numbers from these which have the same units and tens digit. The only way is (2*2*19*61) and (2*2*659) to give 4636 and 2636 respectively.

This means that O = 36 and therefore I = 66.

T and S are 46 and 26 but we are not sure which is which yet. From SIR, R = 82 - S so R = 36 or 56 (with T = 26 or 46)

Comparing TRICE with ICE T + R = 102 so we now know that T = 46 and R = 56,

The answer of 268 follows. (Just for completeness C = 6 but it isn't actually necessary to calculate this)

I have e = 18 because sir = 148 and rise = 164, and they differ only by e

thought I was close with esoteric = trice + rose - r = 190+134 - r
but I can't get r alone!

I have the last digit in O being 4 or 6, because 4*2 and 6*2 end in 6.
I have tr = 102, but that doesn't seem to help.
I have i = o + 30
