Not sure, but I'm going to look for some to give my husband for not giving me anything for Christmas! ;) Actually, I found this:
One belief in the United Kingdom which has been passed down the generations, is the idea of 'Good' and 'Bad' lists of children. Throughout the year, Santa would add names of children to either the good or bad list depending on their behaviour. When it got closer to Christmas time, parents would use the belief to encourage children to behave well. Those who were on the bad list and whose behaviour did not improve before Christmas were said to receive a piece of coal for their 'gift' on Christmas Eve rather than presents. Found it: http://www.orenoque.com/christmas/ -- has great info on Christmas origins and traditions.

Yes!! I received coal many times as a child!!! Hmmm.. but, that is what I asked Santa to bring me!! I liked using coal to melt lead (that I had found in the road from tire balance weights) to make sinkers for fishing.

last year we teased our 2 oldest they are both girls about how they where going to get coal if they didn't behave they didn't believe us, till they woke up and there was only one present for the both of them it was plum full of coal. they started crying so we had to take them d/s to see all there other presents. at the time we thought that it would be funny and that they would laugh about it but they didn't so we decided to not do that again.

Several years ago my children were so naughty on Christmas eve, that instead of filling their stockings with the toys/candy I bought for them, I filled their stockings with charcoal and switches.

Yes I use to give it to my neighbor every year. Started out as a joke, and ended up as a tradition.
