I just had this problem last week. If your motor is not running than is the little nob broken that operates your washing machine when the lid is closed. if your motor is running that it might be the belt.

Depends on the machine. If it is a twintub or older automatic it could be the motor or the belt. If the pump is working chances are it is the belt. If it is an automatic it could be the relay sticking that operates the spin cycle. If the machine is a later electronic with direct drive then the electonic computer is suspect. This often happens after an electrical storm with these machines. It pays to unplug them when not using them or during a electrical storm.
