This often happens when Windows XP did not recognize the audio device or does not have the audio device driver packed into the i386 directory.
You will need to know what audio device is installed on the motherboard. Don't worry. It is printed on the top of the chip and usually located nearby the plug for the external speaker connection at the back of the motherboard.
There are several different manufacturers of Audio Devices so to speculate now would be a mistake. Get the name and number from the audio chip then do a Google Search for the driver for Windows XP.

Start Menu. Right click on My Computer, Properties, Hardware, Device Manager. Go to the Audio Devices. If there is a yellow question mark next to the sound card, you have to reinstall the drivers for it. It may be listed in the Other Devices section if it is not installed. But, if connected, it WILL be listed somewhere in the Device Manager.

You need to download the drivers for the sound card. If you know the model and manufacturer of the mother board they should have the files on their site.
Out of four PCs I've never known windows to get sound working without the proper drivers.
