my only child commited suicide on Valentine's day a few years back.....i do not know the real reason he did this.....all i know is that he did not consider anyone's feelings but his own....and he really left behind alot of sorrow, depression, guilt on my part, i mean the 1st thing i said to myself is where did i go wrong. i have been in and out of therapy for a few years......and it really did not help me that much......i do not understand why he wanted to hurt himself like that......i just do not get it !!!!!!!!!!!

Christmas isn't always so merry...you might as well get used to the idea that you may NEVER know why he killed himself, and why he did it on Christmas eve...it may be that there was some significance to doing it that day, or it may just have been the day that he reached the end of his rope...i've been there-a kid in my class hanged himself on Chrismas eve, we never did find out why, although there were RUMORS of child abuse being involved...i have suffered from depression for decades...and i can tell you from experience-when it's 'blackest of black', the date means very little, although the few holidays when i was alone were especially tough...
and no, medication isn't always the best answer, or even a good one-for some people, the cure is deadlier than the disease-for some folks, just talking to a therapist can help-i tried that and was able to at least get a handle on what was going on...meds just made me feel unreal...a few things i found out along the way...emotional pain CAN be deadly, but it doesn't HAVE to be...a TOTALLY pain-free life is actually a coma...and knowing what the problem is, is halfway to overcoming it...

When someone decides to commit suicide, what day it is, is the furthest thing from their minds. I wonder why you're asking why he did it on a holiday, or if you've wondered at all why he did it in the first place. It almost sounds as if you take this as an "affront."

You've gotten some wise & thoughtful answers since I answered. Petrie10 & gina1 (among others) make good points about depression during holidays. I was going to add that aspect, but I tend to go on & on, so I'm glad others have suggested it. I'm not saying that's why he did it, but it's a possibility. I do, however, think it's cruel, when you don't know anything about someone, to speculate they did it to "punish" or just be mean. Suicide is a very serious thing. It is SELDOM motivated by revenge--if ever--& often is an act of COURAGE.

Suicide victims might chose a day of special significance for reasons known only to them. It might not have been so every one would remember the day of his death. It very well could have been because he felt so useless, depressed, and unworthy, he thought he would give his family a present and rid them of himself and his problems. He could have seen himself as the cause of all the problems in the family, or that no one cared enough. If that was the case, his depression would have deepened during this time of so-called happy family gatherings.
Always take it seriously when someone talks of killing themselves, even if you think it is just a ploy to "get attention." They can't just "get over it." Most of the time depression is a caused from a chemical imbalance in the brain and the person may need antidepressants.
If someone wants to talk to you about their problems and you feel the problems are too much for you to handle, try to get the person to contact a professional.

You know many people think and say.. That is the easy way out! NO it is not!!! It is very selfish! They are thinking of nobody but themselves! And somebody that would do that on any holiday.. Even more selfish and mean, sounds like they want others to suffer even more, because anybody that would do that wants to bring that hurt back into play year after year..
My best friend for 19 years died of cancer on Christmas Day 2004... Since then, it is all I can think of, and yes feel the hurt each year.. I probably always will.
Another friend killed himself on my birthday in 1988.. I have not had a happy one since.

sadly, he might have been taking a bit of revenge out in his action. And he may have had the last worst day of his life, a lot of people are lonely and depressed during the holidays.

I've always heard that people tend to get more depressed during the Holidays.

Because so many people get so depressed on Holidays.

I work at a funeral home, and we get more suicides at the holidays than any other time of the year.

Because he wanted to remind every one of his death on Christmas Eve, as a punishment making the holiday a sad day

Poor guy. He was probably really upset with his family for some reason, and he decided to make them not have a merry Christmas. He may also have heard other people talk bad about him, so he killed himself so he wouldn't be a burden to others. Merry Christmas.
