TO THE OTHER ANSWERERS, THE POINT IS TO DO PREP AT A LOW COST--RALPH LAUREN AND DIESEL ARE NOT CHEAP. Okay.
This depends on what kind of prep you want to portray:
The Chilton Prep or
The Abercrombie Prep.
The Chilton Prep dresses himself in really high fashion stuff. The Ralph Lauren trousers and Lacoste polos and Marc Jacobs timepieces. Very high end, the Chilton Prep's lifestyle includes, but is not limited to private schools and old New England Volvos.
The Abercrombie Prep is the "more watered down" version of the afore mentioned Chilton Prep. The A.P. dresses in polos by brand name stores as opposed to designers. Lots of American Eagle and Aeropostale and of course A&F.
CHILTON:
You can find argyle sweaters and dress socks at JCPenney Company and Marshalls. Macy's has stuff too. You'll need polos which you can find at JCPenney too. You'll need a good sweater to mimick the cashmere Brooks Brothers sweaters so omnipresent on the east coast. Penney's, Marshall's, and Banana Republic have these too.
ABERCROMBIE:
You'll have to buy the tees and polos from the stores. Don't go to Abercrombie unless you want to spend upwards of $60. on a polo. American Eagle has cheap polos (about $20-30) and you can often find stuff on clearance for about $15. (for a polo) and about as low as $5. for a t-shirt. Jeans at A&F will run you just under $100., whereas at AE, you pay about $40. Really, I would suggest Gap and American Eagle as your prime shopping sources for that lower cost.
The Chilton Prep look is best done with the money it costs to look that good. HIGH END SOURCES: Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, Ralph Lauren, Burberry, Cole Haan. LOW END: JCPenney, Gap, Banana Republic, JCrew.
Good luck and Happy Holidays.

Ebay! get nice pair of maybe Deisel or DKNY or Ezra Fitch jeans, maybe a nice pair of steve madden shoes, and toss in a button up Claiborne or Abercrombie shirt and you are golden. You can get 200$ jeans for around 50$ on there, 100$ shoes for around 30$, and 100$ shirts for around 40$. One of the best things to do is go out to some stores and get some names of the clothing you like and try them on, and then do a search for it on ebay. you'll find some super awesome deals. Good luck!

A nice dark pair of jeans, clean un-scuffed shoes and a button-up always looks preppy to me. And you can buy those items at most stores, and just clean your own shoes.
I'm a girl so I know more about girl prep than boy prep.

Part of the style of preppy is that you have extra money to throw around for that sort of thing.
