Dictionaries differ from each other somewhat, it may be french in yours (or Flemish, or Frankish, or a lot of other languages) ...generally the first few pages of the dictionary go all through the format and abbreviations used in that particular dictionary. You NEED to read those pages in order to use the dictionary intelligently.

Definitions almost always are listed in order of most currently used down to the most ancient meanings and usages of a word.

Websters colledge dictionary says F is the sixth letter of the alphabet:abrev for failure

In my dictionary it just says: F, de zesde letter van het alfabet.
