Forever... unless it burns out. If it is a SONY, then until the battery EXPLODES. Of course, I am referring to keeping it powered up with the AC Power Adapter. From a full charge, your battery can probably keep it going for about 2 hours while the battery is NEW, but with age, the battery charge does not last as long.
A laptop should be well ventilated at all times. Do not block any of the ventilation slots. That means that if you actually have it on your LAP, you are probably blocking the vents. Consider using it on a solid, hard surface. Many laptops have drop-down legs or feet. These are not for convenience, but to provide adequate ventilation, and MUST be used.
Many people put a ruler underneath the Screen end, so the vents are open more. You can buy a so-called Laptop Cooling pad, that have fans that are powered by your USB ports.
Good luck and Happy Computing!

If plugged in to an AC adapter, then forever until the AC adapter decides to quit.
If on battery, then that depends on what your doing with your laptop. If you play a lot of games or use power intensive app's then the battery will drain faster.
Windows XP has a battery meter that you can have show up in the notification area of the task bar. Goto Control Panel and double click on the power options icon. In the window that pops up set the option to show the batter meter in the task bar. For the most part it gives a pretty reasonable estimate to how long the battery will operate before needing a recharge.
If you install the Windows Vista operating system on it, it has a VERY good battery meter that tells you how long the battery will power the system. Plus it allows you to quickly switch the power management scheme just by clicking on the batter meter in the notification area. This little feature comes in handy a lot.
Hope that helps!

I have never heard of a maximum time. Mine is on almost all of the time. Have had it for about 1 1/2 years. Probably been off for no more then 100 hours of that time.

danuitti is totaly wrong this is the second time i have had to correct him sony has had a battery recall just like the rest of the computer companies including dell and apple. As long as you want on AC and on battery untill the battery dies which can anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 or 4 hours, depending on what battery you have.

It depends if your using outlet power or battery. The battery power depends on it's cell type, 3 cell, 6 cell, or 12 cell. 12 cell is the best. To see how long you can keep it on, go to the taskbar's notification area and put the mouse cursor over the battery icon. If it's not there, then right click on the desktop, then click properties and go to the screen saver tab. Click on power. Then click on the advanced tab and select show the power properties icon on the taskbar or something like that.
