What you want to do is go to your power control panel. In the advanced tab, there should be a drop down regarding what to do when you shut your laptop lid. Set it to "do nothing". (In the first tab, you can set the monitor to power off after some set time.)
When you want to leave the computer, you can lock the screen but leave your programs running. If you have XP Pro, you ctrl-alt-delete and click the "lock computer" button. If you have XP Home, you can use the -L shortcut to send you to the logon screen. You could also set up a screen saver with a password and set it to come on after a short period of inactivity, so that when you close your lid and leave it for a couple minutes, the screen saver would kick in and require a password.
