July 1, 1863, i would've ordered Ewell to take Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill "at ALL costs!!!" and not 'if practicable."

On July 2, 1863, the second day of the battle, i would've ordered Longstreet to order Gen. Hood's Texans to swing around the extreme Union left to strike at the artillery park and suppy trains.

On July 3, 1863, i would not have ordered 12,000 Virginian to traverse over 1 1/2 mile of open ground, but by the 3rd day, my other two moves the previous day would not have necessitated a third day of battle. By then, the yanks would be high tailing it to Washington.

I'd try to spare my people suffering to any degree possible. If white-flag surrender would lead to slaughter and reprisals, I couldn't do that. If hammering out (negotiating) a smooth end, openly acknowledging that we lost all the while, that would have to do -- IF you were truly losing.
