That depends on the woman, her hand size and strength. Take the coarse with an automatic so you can choose from either style.
You might be more comfortable with the .22, .25, .32 cal range but those are just not big enough and do not either do enough damage if used or look imposing enough. Some of these are even built into belt buckles. Would you be afraid of a belt buckle?
I personally carry a small Taurus 9mm and my roommate carries a .380. Both have hydro shock hollow points and make big holes in what they hit. You don't need a cannon to fire a hot shell. just be careful you hit what you shoot at.
My brother taught me a rule.
Don't ever draw a weapon you don't intend to fire, don't ever fire a warning shot. Be aware that if you pull the weapon, someone is going to die and if you let them get close enough to take it away from you then you are probably going to be the person with dirt in your eyes later.
I have never had to pull mine but even though I have made a few post here about being the submissive in my relationship I do understand that there is a time for meekness and a time to pull the trigger. I hope to god I never have to but I believe I will if I need to.
Any way.
Browse the local gun stores until you find one that feels right in your hand. It should feel more like you are pointing a finger than like you are holding a weapon. Once you find one that feels good you can try different loads for it until you find one that is good for you. Like I said above I use Hydro shock Hollow Points. They are not cheap but I know I shouldn't have to hit something with it but once.

If you are adamant and after the proper training and licensing, this. A small framed Colt cobra revolver with custom Herter grips, in .38 caliber. A small, but powerful enough weapon. Also, a .380 or 9mm caliber semi-automatic pistol. One of the smaller Colt or Smith and Wesson. Under no circumstances should you buy a " Saturday night special " or a .25 caliber handgun. Some of the .22 long rifle chambered weapons may be suitable if you do not want the .38 recoil.

The best way I can think of to answer this , is to have you go to a handgun training course, actually learn how to use one, and train with it regularly. As far as choosing one goes, that will be easier after proper training and experience. You will also be in contact with other women who may be able to help you with the correct choice for you.

A 38 caliber revolver or a 380, if you are inexperienced with weapons. i suggest a revolover, because it is less likely to jam.

I personally would go with mace, but if you MUST have one, use a tiny revolver and leave a chamber empty where the hammer is, that way no accidental shooting.
